BIO140, Environmental Issues online will meet your Associate Degree General Education Lab Science requirement as long as you have another appropriate course with a lab component. Bio 140 is intended for non-biology/non-science majors. In fact, I sometimes refer to this course as the "science course for those who are trying to avoid science courses". Perhaps a better phrase might be to call the course "voters biology" because it deals with the science basis of many contemporary issues such as global warming, air and water pollution, energy issues, and more.

BIO 140 covers the same material you'll learn taking the course sitting in a classroom at the College of Lake County, plus, it has one other major advantage, you can complete the course anywhere you have access to a computer that is connected to the Internet, such as at home, work, your public library, or even at CLC.

There is no "laboratory component" of the course. Double check with your academic advisor to make sure this course will fulfill your "General Education Laboratory Science" requirement.

Taking BIO140 online over the Internet, however, isn't for everyone. To succeed, to benefit most, you should be familiar with basic computer skills like sending e-mail, using a word processing program, and locating web sites on the Internet. Also, you should be able to trouble shoot most technical problems on your own. Being a self-motivated, self-disciplined, time managing, active learner is important, too.

Here's a preview of what BIO140 is all about, what you'll do in it, and how to earn a good grade.

First, you will find the course syllabus online as soon as the course opens. The syllabus will detail the text reading assignments and the testing schedule. There will be weekly quizzes over the sixteen week semester as well as three major exams. Each quiz will be worth ten points while the exams will be worth one hundred points each. In addition you'll also earn points by participating in discussions with other classmates via the Internet. The more points you earn, the higher your grade. It's just that simple.

There are lots of resources to complete the assignments such as a traditional textbook, chat rooms, e-mail, PowerPoints, web sites, study guides, etc.
